Abstract: The diversity and volume of environmental data required to support CERCLA Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL RI/FS) prompted the development of an automated sample tracking system using bar code technology. Use of bar codes has enhanced both efficiency and accuracy related to data gathering and tracking efforts. The automated system has eliminated a number of problems associated with organizing and maintaining a large, relational environmental data base.
